BLACK PEOPLE LIVING WITH MS

BLACK PEOPLE LIVING WITH MS
In fact, MS is almost as prevalent among Black people as it is with White people. But because of the belief Black people can’t get it plus health inequities they may face, Black people may experience a delayed diagnosis and later treatment — which may lead to experiencing more severe symptoms. Those health inequities can include inadequate health insurance, distrust of the healthcare system, transportation issues, and being unable to take time off work for medical needs.
As MS is a progressive disease, it’s important to talk to a doctor early about beginning treatment. If you begin to show symptoms of MS like those listed below, find a doctor you can trust and can build a partnership with for your care. Your doctor is there to help, and it’s okay to speak up and ask any and all questions you may have. If you feel you aren’t getting what you need, you can continue to seek additional opinions until you find a doctor you connect with.
You can get the conversation started by personalizing our Doctor Discussion Guide.
